Are you finding yourself forgetting basic things lately? Or do you need help concentrating before an important presentation or test? One of the best ways to improve memory is through aromatherapy.
We’ll explain how this works, but first, let’s explore how and why people forget things.
What causes memory loss
To understand memory loss, you have to understand how the brain works, and the first thing to understand is neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical substances in the brain that help the brain and nervous system process and transmit information. When neurotransmitters are flowing as they should, the brain functions as it should, allowing people to easily focus, recall details, and store short- and long-term memories.
One neurotransmitter, acetylcholine (ACh), plays an important role in focus. Some researchers believe that a reduction in this neurotransmitter could contribute to memory loss often associated with Alzheimer’s disease. One reason that this might happen is acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme that increases with age and stress. AChE can lead to the breakdown in ACh, which can accelerate the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
How to treat memory loss
If you feel that you are losing your memory, we, of course, recommend that you talk to your doctor. He or she will be able to diagnose any issues and suggest treatment. One such treatment is through the use of drugs (acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or AChEl) that deter AChE from breaking down important neurotransmitters. That being said, all medication can result in side effects.
So, if you’d like to instead go the natural route to boost your memory and concentration and avoid the side effects of medication, there are options. (Again, we suggest talking these through with your doctor before getting started.)
How to improve memory with aromatherapy
One study, conducted by the psychology department at University of Northumbria, tested two essential oils: lavender and rosemary. The results of the study found that lavender essential oil caused feelings of calmness and contentment while rosemary essential oil increased alertness and helped improve memory. Additional tests on rosemary found that compounds within the plant have a direct impact on brain chemistry and can improve memory and brain functionality.
Another essential oil that has been known to help improve memory is peppermint. Studies have shown that adding peppermint alongside rosemary can improve memory and alertness while also promoting better brain function.
