How Scrubs and Chemical Peels Can Work Together to Exfoliate Your Skin

One of the best ways to get gorgeous skin is proper exfoliation. Getting rid of the dead and flakey skin can transform a dull complexion into a radiant one. Scrubs work by manually removing dead skin, but they are only one way to exfoliate. Sometimes scrubs work hand-in-hand with chemical peels.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a technique normally used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands. According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, "It's a chemical solution that is applied to the skin which causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new skin underneath is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin."

Are there different types of peels?

"There are mild peels, such as those with glycolic (fruit based) acid, and harsher ones such as trichloroacetic acid (like a very strong vinegar)," said Debra Maslowski of DIYNatural, "Natural fruit acids act as a natural, homemade chemical peel, sloughing off old dead skin to reveal the newer looking skin underneath."

How can exfolitators be used with chemical peels?

Victoria's Secret model, Georgia Fowler, recently remarked in Harper's Bazaar, "I like SKINny chemical peel in a jar for the backs of arms and thighs for deep exfoliation at night during the week before the show, and I love the SKINny face oil for when I'm feeling super dry—especially after a long flight."

How long should I wait after a peel to exfoliate?

According to facial plastic surgeon, Edward E. Dickerson, IV, MD, "It is best to wait until the skin begins to peel itself and then use a gentle exfoliant . Since skin peeling is the important part of the chemical peel process, you should give your skin some additional time to that process to be completed and for your skin to get some protection layer."
