What helps morning sickness? Coconut oil might!

It’s arguably one of the most unpleasant parts of pregnancy for most mothers. Fortunately, however, morning sickness can be managed. And one of the natural ways to do so is by using coconut oil.

But, first, let’s start with the basics.

When does morning sickness start?

Morning sickness starts during the first trimester of pregnancy and is believed by experts to be triggered by changes in hormone levels, especially rising HCG and estrogen levels, which can affect all women differently. Some pregnant women who experience it state that their symptoms (along with blood spotting and breast tenderness) first start two to three weeks after conception. Most, however, first notice morning sickness between four and nine weeks after conception. It’s also important to note that the digestive issues associated with morning sickness can occur at any time during the day, not just morning.

Not all women experience morning sickness (and it’s perfectly healthy not to), but for the women that do, they generally experience the following symptoms.

Morning sickness symptoms

  • Nausea or queasiness
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Nervousness
  • Stomach cramps
  • Headaches
  • Loss of appetite (especially for vegetables, meat, eggs, or drinks with caffeine or alcohol)
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss

What helps morning sickness?

Most women tend to feel relief after 14 to 16 weeks, others experience relief at 20 to 22 weeks, and the smallest percentage find relief only after the delivery of their baby. If you find yourself experiencing morning sickness, there are things you can do to ease the discomfort.

What helps morning sickness is different for any given woman and should be addressed with your doctor, but we’ll specifically address how coconut oil might help.

The first thing to remember is that you must eat regularly and shouldn’t skip any meals, even though symptoms might make that feel difficult or unrealistic. The reality of the situation is that eating the right foods (including healthy fats!) helps make your body feel better; in fact, the lauric acid in coconut oil can help fight bad bacteria that lives in your gut, improving gut health and digestion. Coconut oil also helps balance your hormones because, whether you know it or not, saturated fats are needed for that very reason. And we all know hormones are a very important part of pregnancy!
