For many, long, thick eyelashes are a sign of beauty and femininity. It makes sense, then, that many women would do just about anything to help make their eyelashes stand out and be more beautiful. But, did you know that coconut oil may be the answer? Keep reading this blog to learn why!
Coconut oil for eyelashes
First thing’s first: coconut oil has been shown to be safe for use around the eyes, as found in both human and animal studies. Beyond being just safe, however, coconut oil can also provide benefits for your eyelashes and surrounding eye area.
Stronger eyelashes
Though there isn’t specific evidence related to your eyelashes when it comes to strengthening them with coconut oil, there is evidence that it can help protect the hair on your head from the damage from washing your hair, hair products, and styling. In theory, this evidence would also apply to eyelash hair.
The reason? Coconut oil contains fatty acids such as lauric acid, which, according to research, help the hair shaft more easily absorb the coconut oil. It’s believed that this may be why coconut oil provides better and longer-lasting protection than other oils you may apply to your hair. For example, one study found that applying coconut oil to hair before or after washing it protected it by reducing protein loss. One could assume then that doing the same could help protect your eyelashes from damage caused by washing your face or removing eye makeup.
Fuller looking eyelashes
As mentioned above, coconut oil helps moisturize and protect hair from protein loss and damage. If you apply that same concept to your eyelashes, this could result in fewer eyelashes falling out when you wash your face or remove your makeup, causing your eyelashes to appear thicker and fuller.
Protection against bacteria
At any given time, your eyelashes naturally host microbial organisms that have the potential to cause bacterial and fungal infections. Medium-chain fatty acids (such as lauric acid) found in coconut oil have antimicrobial and antifungal properties that can protect against these organisms, however.
This means that applying coconut oil to your eyelashes and your entire eye area may protect you from skin infections such as folliculitis, which is inflammation of the hair follicles.
How to apply coconut oil to eyelashes
If you’re interested in using pure coconut oil for your eyelashes, you have a couple of options for how to do so, using different Skinny & Co. products.
Use Cleansing Balm & Makeup Remover
Skinny & Co. Cleansing Balms were made using pure coconut oil and therapeutic-grade essential oils. While you can (and should!) use them on your entire face to cleanse and moisturize, they’re especially great for removing makeup, including waterproof eye makeup. Simply apply a small amount to your eyelids and eyelashes, and gently rub it in. Then, wipe it away with warm water to remove your makeup without harming your eyelashes.
Use Pure Beauty
If you don’t have Cleansing Balms on hand, would prefer to use pure coconut oil without Skinny & Co.’s chosen therapeutic-grade essential oils, or want to use your own essential oils, Pure Beauty Coconut Oil is a great choice. To use it on your eyelashes, do the following:
- Start by washing your hands.
- Use your index finger to obtain a small amount of Pure Beauty Coconut Oil from the jar.
- Rub the Pure Beauty Coconut Oil between your two index fingers.
- Close your eyes, and rub the oil gently along your lash lines.
- Allow it to dry, and gently wipe away any excess oil to make that necessary.
